Reinforced Asphalt Systems
In 2018, we examined the existing asset and advised the developer to take advantage of the redundant reinforcements remaining in the old asset. An alternative option would have been to cover-over the existing system, by drilling thousands of screws through the old asset so that a thin .060" sheet could be overlain. Where is the benefit from punching holes into a perfectly good restoration candidate?
Instead, we offered longer, higher strength performance from fully adhering another heavy-duty ply of reinforced modified asphalt, seen in the lower photo, installed by one of our cadre of applicators. For the cost of the thin sheet being installed, the developer received a non-woven polyester reinforced, compatible membrane that is three times the thickness of the optional thin sheet, without penetrating the roof. The new sacrificial membrane sits upon four more fiberglass reinforcements, perpetually restorable, again and again. The roof will now serve for three to four decades with only preventive maintenance. Total cost: pennies per square foot per year.
